On February 21, 1965, civil rights activist Malcolm X was assassinated while preparing to address the Organization of Afro-American Unity in New York City. Three members of the Nation of Islam were convicted of the shooting. A controversial but influential figure who advocated for Black empowerment and self-defense, his autobiography and ideas became foundational to the Black Power movement.
