In 1863, the International Committee of the Red Cross was founded in Geneva by Henry Dunant. Henry Dunant's ideas led to its creation to protect human life and health, to ensure respect for all human beings, and to prevent and alleviate human suffering.

It established a neutral organization to care for war wounded and promoted the Geneva Conventions.
