Brown v. Board of Education

On May 17, 1954, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a unanimous ruling in Brown v. Board of Education, declaring that state laws establishing separate public schools for black and white students were unconstitutional. The decision overturned the 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson "separate but equal" doctrine. It was a landmark victory for the Civil Rights Movement, paving the way for integration.
