Signing of the Magna Carta (1215-06-15)

King John of England agreed to the charter of liberties at Runnymede. It established the principle that everyone is subject to the law, even the king, and guarantees the rights of individuals, the right to justice and the right to a fair trial. The document was originally drafted by the Archbishop of Canterbury to make peace between the unpopular King and a group of rebel barons.
