On March 30, 1981, President Ronald Reagan was shot and wounded by John Hinckley Jr. outside the Washington Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C.

Reagan suffered a punctured lung but recovered quickly. Three others were injured, including Press Secretary James Brady, who was permanently disabled, prompting later gun control legislation.
