Event Details

A fire broke out at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in New York City on March 25, 1911. Because the owners had locked the doors to the stairwells and exits, 146 garment workers, mostly young immigrant women, died.

The tragedy led to a massive public outcry and sweeping legislative reforms regarding workplace safety and factory conditions.
