Iraq War Begins

On March 19, 2003 (EST), the United States, along with coalition forces, launched a military invasion of Iraq. The campaign began with an airstrike on a compound in Baghdad where Saddam Hussein was believed to be hiding.

The invasion, aimed at disarming Iraq of alleged weapons of mass destruction, toppled Hussein's regime but led to years of insurgency and regional instability.
