Patent for the Cotton Gin

Eli Whitney was granted a patent for the cotton gin on March 14, 1794. The machine quickly and easily separated cotton fibers from their seeds.

While it revolutionized the Southern economy, the invention drastically increased the demand for enslaved labor to pick the newly profitable crop.
