In 1336, brothers Harihara I and Bukka Raya I founded the Vijayanagara Empire on the banks of the Tungabhadra River.

Legacy: The empire became a bastion of Hindu culture and resistance against the Deccan Sultanates. Its capital, Hampi, was a center of wealth, trade, and architecture, now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
