First Flight across English Channel

On July 25, 1909, French aviator Louis Blériot became the first person to fly an airplane across the English Channel, traveling from Calais to Dover in 36 minutes.

The flight proved that airplanes could be practical vehicles for travel and that Britain was no longer an island immune to aerial threats.
