On February 1, 1790, the U.S. Supreme Court held its inaugural session at the Royal Exchange Building in New York City. Presided over by Chief Justice John Jay, the court had no cases to hear initially.
It established the judiciary as a co-equal branch of the U.S. government, later cemented by the power of judicial review.
