On January 21, 1924, Vladimir Lenin, the leader of the Bolshevik Revolution and the first head of the Soviet Union, died of a stroke at age 53. His death triggered a power struggle from which Joseph Stalin emerged victorious, eventually purging rivals like Trotsky. Lenin's embalmed body was placed in a mausoleum in Red Square, becoming a symbol of the Communist state.
