Sinking of the Bismarck
Unverified
Event Details
On May 27, 1941, the German battleship Bismarck was sunk by the British Royal Navy in the North Atlantic. After a relentless pursuit, torpedoes from Swordfish biplanes jammed its rudder, allowing British battleships to close in.
The sinking ended the threat of German surface raiders to Allied convoys, shifting the naval war largely to U-boats.
