Event Details

On August 8, 1942, at the Gowalia Tank Maidan in Bombay (now Mumbai), the All India Congress Committee launched the Quit India Movement. Mahatma Gandhi delivered his famous "Do or Die" speech, demanding an orderly British withdrawal from India.

Response: The British colonial government responded with immediate and mass arrests. Gandhi, Nehru, and almost the entire leadership of the Indian National Congress were imprisoned without trial within hours.

Legacy: Despite the crackdown, the movement sparked widespread protests and acts of sabotage across the country, demonstrating the depth of nationalist sentiment and signaling the final phase of the struggle for independence.
