Event Details

On January 23, 1933 US Congress ratified the 20th Amendment. The amendment moved the beginning and ending of the terms of the President and Vice President to January 20, and for Senators and Representatives to January 3. Prior to 1933, Presidential Inaugurations were normally held on March 4.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the first President to be sworn in on January 20 in 1937.
