Discovery of the Electron

On April 30, 1897, J.J. Thomson announced the discovery of the "corpuscle" (electron) at the Royal Institution. He showed that cathode rays were composed of negatively charged particles much smaller than atoms.

This was the first subatomic particle discovered, proving the atom was not indivisible. It birthed the fields of particle physics and electronics.
