Event Details

On December 19, 1961, Indian armed forces launched Operation Vijay, a military campaign to liberate the territories of Goa, Daman, and Diu from Portuguese colonial rule.

Context: Portugal had refused to negotiate the handover of its Indian enclaves. The operation lasted less than 36 hours, resulting in the unconditional surrender of Portuguese forces.

Legacy: This action ended 451 years of Portuguese rule in the subcontinent and completed the territorial integration of India. December 19 is celebrated as Goa Liberation Day.
