Alaska Purchase Signed

U.S. Secretary of State William H. Seward and Russian Minister to the United States Eduard de Stoeckl signed the Treaty of Cession on March 30, 1867, purchasing Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million.

Initially mocked by critics, the purchase added nearly 600,000 square miles to the U.S. and proved highly valuable after the discovery of gold and oil.
