Declaration of US Independence

On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress ratified the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia. Drafted primarily by Thomas Jefferson, the document announced the separation of the 13 North American colonies from Great Britain, asserting that "all men are created equal."

The declaration launched the American Revolutionary War and inspired democratic movements globally.
