On March 27, 1977, two Boeing 747 passenger jets, operated by KLM and Pan Am, collided on the runway at Los Rodeos Airport on the Spanish island of Tenerife.

The collision resulted in 583 fatalities, making it the deadliest accident in aviation history. Heavy fog and communication breakdowns were primary causes.
