Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand (1914-06-28)
Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife Sophie were shot dead by Gavrilo Princip. The assassination led directly to the First World War. Princip was one of a group of six assassins coordinated by Danilo Ilić, a Bosnian Serb and a member of the Black Hand secret society.
