Event Details

On January 30, 1948, Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation, was assassinated at Birla House (now Gandhi Smriti) in New Delhi. He was shot three times at point-blank range by Nathuram Godse, a Hindu nationalist, while engaging in his evening prayer meeting.

Godse believed Gandhi was too accommodating to Muslims during the Partition of India. Gandhi's last words were reported to be "Hey Ram" (Oh God).

His death plunged the newly independent nation into deep mourning and temporarily quelled the communal violence ravaging the country. It remains a somber day in Indian history, observed as Martyrs' Day.
