Event Details

On December 29, 1890, U.S. Army troops killed approximately 300 Lakota men, women, and children at Wounded Knee Creek in South Dakota. The massacre suppressed the Ghost Dance movement and is considered the final major conflict of the Indian Wars. It remains a symbol of the mistreatment of Native Americans by the U.S. government.
