India Gains Independence
Event Details
On August 15, 1947, India awoke to life and freedom, ending nearly 200 years of British colonial rule. The transfer of power was marked by the lowering of the Union Jack and the hoisting of the Indian Tricolour at the Red Fort in Delhi by the first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.
Context: The independence came after decades of non-violent resistance led by Mahatma Gandhi and the Indian National Congress, as well as the sacrifices of countless revolutionaries. However, the joy of freedom was tempered by the simultaneous Partition of India, which created the separate nation of Pakistan and led to massive communal violence and migration.
Legacy: India emerged as the world's largest democracy. The date is celebrated annually as Independence Day, a national holiday marked by cultural events and flag-hoisting ceremonies across the country.
