First Detection of Gravitational Waves

On September 14, 2015, the LIGO observatory detected gravitational waves for the first time. They were generated by the collision of two black holes 1.3 billion light-years away.

This confirmed a major prediction of Einstein's General Relativity and opened a new window for astronomy to observe the universe through gravity rather than light.
