Event Details

On July 2, 1881, President James A. Garfield was shot by Charles Guiteau, a disgruntled office-seeker, in Washington, D.C. He died of infection on September 19.

His death led to the passage of the Pendleton Civil Service Reform Act, ending the "spoils system" of political patronage.
