Event Details

Spanish Conquistador Francisco Pizarro established Lima, Peru as a calculated geopolitical move by the Spanish Crown to secure a coastal stronghold for the Viceroyalty of Peru, shifting power away from the high-altitude Andes to the Pacific coast.

Pizarro originally established his capital in Jauja, located high in the Andes. However, the Spanish soon realized that Jauja had critical strategic flaws:

  • Altitude: The high elevation was difficult for the Spanish and their horses.
  • Isolation: It was too far from the sea, making it dangerous and difficult to ship gold back to Spain or receive supplies.

Pizarro sent scouts to the coast, who identified the Rímac valley as ideal due to its proximity to a natural harbor (modern-day Callao), abundant fresh water, and firewood.

By 1543, it became the capital of the Viceroyalty of Peru, serving as the political, administrative, and economic hub for nearly all of Spanish South America for over two centuries.
