Event Details

On January 30, 1835, Richard Lawrence attempted to shoot President Andrew Jackson outside the U.S. Capitol. It was the first assassination attempt on a sitting U.S. president.

The Incident: Lawrence's two pistols both misfired, attributed to the damp weather. Jackson attacked Lawrence with his cane before the assailant was restrained. Lawrence was later found to be insane.
