Event Details
On April 26, 1986, the No. 4 reactor at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine (then USSR) exploded during a safety test. The blast released 400 times more radioactive material than the Hiroshima bomb. The disaster forced the evacuation of over 100,000 people from the exclusion zone.
It highlighted the dangers of nuclear power, caused thousands of long-term cancer deaths, and contributed to the collapse of the Soviet Union.
