Event Details
On May 11, 1998, India conducted a series of five nuclear bomb test explosions at the Indian Army's Pokhran Test Range. Codenamed Operation Shakti, the tests were authorized by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Details: The tests included a fission device, a low-yield device, and a thermonuclear device. Two more tests followed on May 13. This declared India as a full-fledged nuclear state.
Legacy: While the tests drew immediate international sanctions, they established India's strategic autonomy and deterrence capability. May 11 is now celebrated as National Technology Day in India.
