Polio Vaccine Announced

American medical researcher Dr. Jonas Salk announced on a national radio show on March 26, 1953, that he had successfully tested a vaccine against poliomyelitis (polio).

Following widespread clinical trials, the vaccine was declared safe and effective in 1955, leading to the near eradication of the crippling disease globally.
