On the morning of India's 52nd Republic Day, January 26, 2001, a massive earthquake of magnitude 7.7 struck the Kutch district of Gujarat. The epicenter was near the village of Chobari.

Statistics: The quake killed over 20,000 people, injured more than 167,000, and destroyed nearly 400,000 homes. The historic city of Bhuj was devastated.

Legacy: The disaster led to a massive reconstruction effort and a significant overhaul of India's disaster management policies, including the enactment of the Disaster Management Act, 2005.
