Event Details

On January 31, 1606, Guy Fawkes was executed for his role in the Gunpowder Plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament and assassinate the English King James I. The plot was motivated by the desire to end the persecution of Catholics in England.

He was sentenced to be hanged (until nearly dead), drawn, and quartered. While climbing the ladder to the noose to be hanged, he either jumped or fell, breaking his neck and dying instantly thus avoiding the full agony of being drawn and quartered.

His death ended the immediate threat to the King, but his image persists today as a symbol of rebellion (e.g., V for Vendetta mask).
