Event Details

On October 16, 1905, the British Viceroy Lord Curzon partitioned the province of Bengal into two entities: 'Bengal' (West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar) and 'Eastern Bengal and Assam'.

Reaction: The move was seen as a 'divide and rule' tactic to weaken the nationalist movement. It triggered the massive Swadeshi Movement.

Legacy: Due to fierce protests, the partition was annulled in 1911, but it sowed the seeds of communal division.
