Truman Doctrine Announced

On March 12, 1947, President Harry S. Truman asked Congress for $400 million in military and economic assistance for Turkey and Greece to prevent them from falling to Soviet communist forces.

This policy, known as the Truman Doctrine, effectively established the U.S. strategy of containment, setting the course of American foreign policy for the Cold War.
