Event Details

In 480 BC, a small Greek force led by King Leonidas I of Sparta held off the massive Persian army of Xerxes I for three days at the narrow pass of Thermopylae.

Though a defeat, the Greeks' heroic stand allowed the rest of Greece to prepare, leading to eventual victory at Salamis and Plataea.
