A massive 9.2 magnitude megathrust earthquake struck the Prince William Sound region of Alaska on Good Friday, March 27, 1964.

Lasting nearly five minutes, it is the most powerful earthquake recorded in North American history. The quake and resulting tsunamis caused significant destruction and the deaths of 131 people.
