Lewis and Clark Depart

On May 14, 1804, the Corps of Discovery, led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, departed from Camp Dubois near St. Louis to explore the newly acquired Louisiana Territory.

Their 8,000-mile journey mapped the American West, established trade with Native American tribes, and strengthened U.S. claims to the Pacific Northwest.
