Event Details

On March 5, 1953, Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin died of a stroke after suffering a hemorrhagic stroke. His health had been declining for some time, and he was found unconscious in his room before passing away later that evening.

His death led to a power struggle and eventually the rise of Nikita Khrushchev.

Khrushchev initiated a period of "de-Stalinization," revealing Stalin's crimes and slightly thawing relations with the West.
