Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov became the first human to conduct extravehicular activity (EVA), or a 'spacewalk', on March 18, 1965, during the Voskhod 2 mission.

Leonov spent 12 minutes outside the spacecraft. The mission experienced severe technical difficulties but marked a significant milestone in the Space Race.
