Establishment of Yellowstone National Park

On March 1, 1872, President Ulysses S. Grant signed the Yellowstone National Park Protection Act into law. The world's first national park was created to preserve and protect the scenery, cultural heritage, wildlife, and geologic and ecological systems and processes in their natural condition.

This act set a precedent for the conservation movement worldwide, leading to the creation of national parks globally.
