On January 30, 1972, British soldiers shot 26 unarmed civilians during a protest march in the Bogside area of Derry, Northern Ireland. Fourteen people died: thirteen were killed outright, and the death of another man four months later was attributed to his injuries.

Aftermath: The event, known as Bloody Sunday, intensified the conflict in Northern Ireland known as 'The Troubles' and led to increased recruitment for the Provisional IRA.
