Event Details

On March 12, 1930, Mahatma Gandhi began the Dandi March, walking 240 miles (390 km) from Sabarmati Ashram to the coastal village of Dandi to produce salt from seawater, in defiance of the British salt monopoly.

Context: The Salt Act prohibited Indians from collecting or selling salt, a staple of the Indian diet. Gandhi's act of civil disobedience sparked a massive wave of protests across the country, known as the Civil Disobedience Movement.

Legacy: The march garnered worldwide attention and demonstrated the power of non-violent resistance (Satyagraha). It significantly eroded British authority and united diverse sections of Indian society against colonial rule.
