Event Details

On September 24, 1932, an agreement known as the Poona Pact was signed between Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi (represented by Madan Mohan Malaviya) at Yerwada Central Jail, Pune.

Context: Gandhi was fasting against separate electorates for Dalits. The pact abandoned separate electorates but reserved seats for the depressed classes within the general electorate.

Legacy: It shaped the political representation of Scheduled Castes in India.
