Event Details

The Battle of Plassey was fought on June 23, 1757, at Palashi on the banks of the Hooghly River. British East India Company forces, led by Robert Clive, defeated the much larger army of Siraj-ud-Daulah, the Nawab of Bengal.

Details: The victory was largely due to the betrayal of the Nawab by his commander-in-chief, Mir Jafar, who had conspired with the British. This defeat allowed the Company to seize control of Bengal's vast resources.

Legacy: This battle is regarded as the pivotal event that established British political rule in India, transforming a trading company into an imperial power that would dominate the subcontinent for nearly two centuries.
