Discovery of Machu Picchu

On July 24, 1911, American historian Hiram Bingham was guided by locals to the ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru. The 15th-century Incan citadel sits high in the Andes Mountains.

It became one of the world's most famous archaeological sites and a symbol of the Incan Empire's architectural prowess.
